Basqueland Brewing from Spain

Cosmopolitan beers from a brewery that has so earned its success: Because their hop-accented Hazy beers are just as delicious as their intense Imperial Stouts or their refreshing Lagers! The brewery from San Sebastián in the Basque Country is convincing all along the line - you should try its beers!

San Sebastián: No longer just a culinary hotspot, but also a craft beer epicenter

One of the three Basqueland Brewing founders, Kavin Patricio, once came to the Basque Country, more precisely to San Sebastián, as a chef from the USA. The city and surrounding region are known worldwide for their fantastic food scene and best wines. But there was one thing Patricio kept missing: good beer. He was used to being able to enjoy great craft beer on seemingly every corner from the United States.

The craft beer boom, as he knew it from the USA or Great Britain, had not yet arrived in Spain in the early 2010s. There, palatable lagers dominated the beer world. This was to change slowly but surely: In 2013, Basqueland Brewing, then still a gypsy brewer, brewed its first beer: a Belgian Blond Ale.

In 2015, Basqueland really took off. Outside of San Sebastián, they move into their own brewery, having everything in their own hands from that point on. Their growth is organic, and so the brewery's output grows bit by bit, year after year. While Basqueland initially bottled, they switched to cans fairly quickly. The reasons are obvious: cans are fancier, easier to transport, and much better for the taste of the beers.

Today, Basqueland Brewing is not only one of the leading breweries in Spain, but in the premier league throughout Europe. Their New England style brewed IPAs, Double IPAs and Triple IPAs are appreciated and loved all over the continent. Their range in Imperial Stout goes from crazy pastry combinations to classic barrel-aged. The brewery just doesn't commit to the hip styles. Best example: in early January 2021, they bottled Tasman, a Pilsner with New Zealand hops. They also have an Amber Ale or Fruit Sours in their portfolio!

In addition to the specials, Basqueland's Core Range beers are incredibly tasty:

  •     AUPA, a classic American Pale Ale with great hop aromatics.
  •     Imparable IPA, a strong West Coast IPA
  •     Santa Clara, a refreshing Helles, the perfect thirst quencher!

Food and Basqueland? Complement each other perfectly!

In keeping with founder Kevin Patricio's roots, the link between Basqueland Brewing beer and good food is, of course, not to be missed. In fact, it's an important part of the brewery's philosophy. In 2020, Basqueland Izakaia opened in the heart of San Sebastián. There, in addition to the brewery's freshest beers, they also offer wine from small producers. And if you feel like it, you can also enjoy the fantastic cuisine at Izakaia: The best bar food inspired by the different cuisines of Asia, such as dumplings, Ramen or Teriyaki, always adapted to the season.

And if you want to make the trip, you can also enjoy Basqueland beers in the taproom attached to the brewery! There are also always small events with the appropriate food pairings!

In the best company

The entire list of their already won awards can not be listed here, as well as the one that contains all collaborations or at which beer festival the brewery was a guest. Only this much:
