Freigeist Bierkultur

Freigeist Bierkultur

In 2009, Sebastian Sauer, together with Peter Esser from the Braustelle in Cologne, founded the Freigeist Bierkultur. The first joint beer was the Abraxxxas, a modern interpretation of the extinct, sour and smoky beer style Lichtenhainer. With this revival of a historic beer style, the foundation and the direction for future  was laid. Today, Sauer works in the Braustelle brewery and with other breweries, like Vormann in Hagen-Dahl. The philosophy behind the Freigeist is the reflection of what an old beer style might be today if it had never been extinct but continued. Modernizing the old styles according to your own ideas can also mean working with unusual ingredients and combinations. The success of Freigeist goes far beyond the German borders. With his unusual projects, Sauer is one of the few brewers in the German craft beer scene, which is also celebrated in the USA.
