The USA is THE craft beer country. This is where Craft Beer was invented and came of age. Even today, North America is considered the poster child when it comes to Craft Beer. More than 8000 small craft breweries now brew their creative beers in the land of endless possibilities. Among others, some of the most hyped and popular breweries in the world, such as Other Half or Equilibrium, come from the US.

Beginnings of American Craft Beer

In the late 1970s, Jimmy Carter was elected as President of the United States of America. The Democratic president was apparently a beer lover, as he made it possible for brewing beer to become legal again, even in the home. The Americans with their DIY mentality liked that and quickly developed a fluorinating homebrewer scene. Also, at the same time, small breweries were already springing up as a contrast and counterpart to the big beer corporations like Anheuser Busch and Miller. Two of the founding fathers and first craft breweries were Anchor Brewing and Sierra Nevada from California. Both hobby brewers and micro breweries were inspired by the historic beer styles of Europe. At the forefront were English styles such as IPA or porter and stout and Belgian styles such as strong ales.

Breakthrough in the 2000s

Despite the growing number of small breweries, the takeover wave of the large corporations resulted in the presence of industrial beers reaching a peak. But that's exactly why even more small breweries formed to revolutionize the market. Each year the number of craft breweries increased and a completely separate industry developed. Hop cultivation in the northwest of the country exploded, malting barley was grown regionally, and brewing equipment was produced domestically.

Since 2010 at the latest, the entire craft beer wave spilled over into Europe, and the U.S. became even more of the forefather of a new idea and movement. Due to the optimal networking, the many years of experience and the high-quality resources, American beer is now considered the ultimate - at least in the creative beer sector.
