The Creative Brewery That Pushes Boundaries
Mikkeller from Copenhagen is more than just a brewery – it is a movement that has helped revolutionize the world of craft beer. Known for its experimental spirit and extraordinary creations, Mikkeller has earned a global reputation as a pioneer of modern brewing. With a portfolio ranging from classic styles to avant-garde beers, the brewery delights beer lovers all over the world.
The Story of Mikkeller: From Homebrewing to a Global Brand
Mikkeller’s story began in 2006 in Copenhagen, when former physics teacher Mikkel Borg Bjergsø started experimenting with beer in his own kitchen. What began as a passion project quickly evolved into an international phenomenon. Without owning a permanent brewery at first, Mikkeller embraced the concept of “gypsy brewing,” producing its beers at partner breweries around the world.
This innovative approach allowed Mikkeller to remain flexible and highly creative. Today, Mikkeller is a global brand with breweries and bars in cities such as Copenhagen, San Diego, Tokyo, and Barcelona.

His goal was to create beers defined by exceptional flavor and uncompromising quality.
Mikkel’s innovative mindset and willingness to take unconventional paths have made Mikkeller one of the most creative and influential breweries in the world.

Innovation as the Brewery’s DNA
What sets Mikkeller apart from other breweries is its relentless drive for innovation. As one of the pioneers that popularized the concept of gypsy brewing, Mikkeller has never stopped pushing the limits of what beer can be. Collaborations with top chefs, artists, and other breweries regularly result in exceptional and limited-edition beers.
1Another standout initiative is the Mikkeller Running Club, which connects people around the world who share a passion for running and beer. This unique fusion of lifestyle, sport, and brewing culture perfectly reflects Mikkeller’s creative philosophy.
A Global Phenomenon with Danish Roots
Originally founded as a gypsy brewery without its own production facility, Mikkeller is headquartered in the heart of Copenhagen. The Mikkeller headquarters is located in Carlsberg Byen, a newly developed district on the former grounds of the historic Carlsberg brewery.
This location serves not only as the administrative center but also as a creative hub from which Mikkeller’s beers are distributed worldwide. The interior design of the headquarters was created by Femmes Régionales and combines elements of the original Mikkeller bars with colorful themes inspired by renowned Danish designer Verner Panton. This design reflects Mikkeller’s philosophy: a blend of tradition, innovation, and quality.
While Mikkeller initially brewed its beers exclusively at partner breweries around the world, the company has since opened several of its own breweries and bars. These include locations in Copenhagen, San Diego, and Tokyo. In Copenhagen, Mikkeller operates venues such as the Mikkeller Bar on Viktoriagade and Mikkeller & Friends on Stefansgade.
The technical equipment at these breweries is state of the art, enabling Mikkeller to produce a wide range of beers with exceptional precision and quality. Despite its growth and expansion, Mikkeller remains true to its original philosophy: constantly pushing the boundaries of brewing and offering innovative flavor experiences to beer lovers worldwide.
Mikkeller – A Synonym for Creativity and Quality
Mikkeller is far more than just a brewery – it is an inspiration for the global craft beer scene. With an endless drive for innovation and a deep attention to detail, Mikkeller has redefined the art of brewing. Whether in Copenhagen or at one of its many international locations, Mikkeller stands for exceptional taste and an uncompromising passion for beer.
