Traditional English beer
Old Peculier is one of England's most renowned and highly regarded ales. This distinctive, expressive beer has been imitated many times but never truly copied, and is now enjoyed worldwide. Numerous awards underscore its status and make it a symbol of British brewing tradition, of which the UK is justifiably proud. Its roots go back some two hundred years to the beginnings of modern brewing. At that time, many breweries brewed a dark, strong beer known as ‘stock beer’ during the winter months, which served as a mature base for beers produced during the changeable summer months. Old Peculier is likely to have emerged from this practice. The name refers on the one hand to Masham's special ecclesiastical status as the ‘Court of the Peculier’ and on the other hand to the distinctive, powerful character of the beer. For many years, it was also affectionately known as ‘Yorkshire's Lunatic's Broth’ – the fool's drink from Yorkshire.
