Thrive – Beer Reinvented: Alcohol-Free, Functional, Scientifically Engineered

Belgian brand Thrive, based in Ghent, is rewriting the rules of beer. What started in 2021 as a wild idea among Ironman training partners has become one of the most exciting innovation stories in the European beer scene: alcohol-free beer with real functionality, positioned not as a compromise but as an entirely new category.

Founder Laurens D'Hoore – a lawyer and passionate triathlete – was training for the full Ironman distance with friends when he ran into the classic Belgian dilemma: his beloved post-training beer just didn't fit his training plan, and chocolate recovery shakes weren't the answer either. Together with co-founder Thomas Deryckere and the brewing scientists at KU Leuven (University of Leuven), he spent over a year developing a beer that delivers the right ratio of protein and carbs – without alcohol, added sugar, or artificial flavorings.

The brewing trick: Thrive uses a special fermentation process with a purpose-selected yeast strain that produces almost no alcohol by itself. The costly, flavor-damaging dealcoholization step used in most conventional alcohol-free beers is skipped entirely. The result: more aroma, more style character, and a noticeably fuller drinking experience.
