Kompaan – Craft Beer Brewed in the Spirit of Friendship
Kompaan Dutch Craft Beer Company from The Hague is one of the defining names in the modern Dutch craft beer scene. Founded in 2015 by two lifelong school friends, Jeroen van Ditmarsch and Jasper, the brewery's name says it all: "kompaan" is Dutch for companion, buddy, or fellow traveler. That spirit – sharing great beer among friends – runs through everything they brew. The modern spelling (kompaan rather than the archaic compaen) reflects the brewery's contemporary, boundary-pushing attitude.
Based in the raw industrial Binckhorst district, Kompaan operates a wide-ranging brewhouse and an ambitious barrel-aging program. The entire core range is named after forms of companionship: Levensgenieter (a juicy, hop-forward New England IPA), Handlanger (a Double IPA loaded with Simcoe, Mosaic, Cascade & Amarillo), Bondgenoot (Belgian Pale Ale), Kameraad (a body-driven cold-hopped Pilsner), and the legendary Bloedbroeder – a pitch-black Imperial Stout fermented with port wine. This beer was crowned Best Beer of the Netherlands in 2017 and took home Gold medals at both the Barcelona Beer Challenge and the Dutch Beer Challenge that same year.
Beyond the core range, Kompaan regularly releases limited editions, barrel-aged brews in whisky, bourbon, and genever casks, along with seasonal specialties like the Battle Royale series and their Blubberdikkejetsers pastry stouts. Two taphouses in The Hague (Thuishaven & Binnenhaven) round out the picture of a rebellious, fast-growing brewery defining what contemporary Dutch craft beer can look like.
In our shop, you'll find a curated selection of the latest Kompaan releases – fresh, cold-stored, and shipped straight from the source.
