Duvel Moortgat – Belgian heritage brewery for iconic strong beers
Duvel Moortgat is a traditional, family-run brewery located in Breendonk near Puurs, delivering top-quality specialty beers since 1871. Its most famous product is the top-fermented, amber-colored Duvel (8.5% ABV), a Belgian Strong Pale Ale that has achieved cult status since the 1920s. With its smooth texture, delicate hop bitterness, and characteristic bottle fermentation, it is widely regarded as a benchmark for strong beers.
Now in its fourth generation, the brewery values both tradition and innovation. Beyond the classic Duvel, the portfolio includes specialties such as Duvel Tripel Hop (a yearly rotating triple-hop strong ale), the milder Duvel 6.66, the popular Vedett, as well as other brands like Maredsous, Liefmans, and De Koninck, all part of the Duvel Moortgat group.
Through continuous investment, sustainable production, and international expansion, Duvel Moortgat has established itself as a global player. Its distinctive Scottish yeast (imported in 1920 by founder Albert Moortgat), characteristic bottle fermentation, and iconic chalice glass (“Maurerbombe”) define the brewery’s identity.
